Montreal With Kids

Montreal is probably one of my top family-friendly destinations in North America. We had a visit there four years ago and we loved every single part of our stay. We just recently had the opportunity to go back and visit for a couple of days and our thoughts have been confirmed. Here are our top things to do in Montreal with kids.

Here is the Wandering Darlings list of 9 things to NOT miss when visiting Montreal with your kids!
  1. Biodome – This was closed during our most recent visit, but you can read about our time at the Biodome, here.  The Biodome is closed for renovations but will be open again by the spring of 2020. But make sure to check before you plan your trip because if you are expecting to go, you’ll want to make sure that the remodel is completed. We really were disappointed it wasn’t open, and I don’t want that for you!
  2.  The Insectarium – The insectarium is another amazing place in Montreal,          again, this is also going through a major renovation and will not be opened until   2021. So definitely check before you plan your trip.
  3. The Old Port zipline and The Voiles en Voiles amusement park – The Old Port of Montreal is an area you don’t want to miss strolling through and if you have adventurous children you may just want to spend a few hours at the amusement park along the water. The aerial courses at Voiles en Voiles have no size or weight restrictions, as they have harnesses made for smaller children, but some of the courses do have a requirement of completing some of the previous courses before you can enter.
  4.   Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium –  located right next to the biodome, the planetarium has two large theatres showing films about astronomy and our solar system, they’re offered in both French and English.
  5.  The Jardin Botanique – These gardens are incredible, both indoors and out. Definitely one of our favorite spots in the city.  With ten greenhouses and 20 different gardens spread throughout the acreage, this is a perfect “nature day” in a city visit.
  6.  La Ronde Amusement Park – where Voiles en Voiles was all aerial courses, La Ronde is a thrill seeker heaven of roller coasters. They also have smaller rides for younger children.
  7.  Cirque du Soleil – Though Montreal is home to Cirque du Soleil, they don’t always have shows playing, but if you’re in town during one, I highly recommend taking your children to see one. The talent is otherworldly, and what better place to take it in than the birthplace of Cirque du Soleil.
  8.  Pointe-a-Calliere – Montreal’s Archaeology and History museum is loaded with hand-on exhibits for exploration through Montreal’s own history and archaeological past as well as four additional exhibits that rotate out through the year. If you have a child who loves digging and exploring, this is a great stop.
  9.  Science Centre – A science museum is always a great place to capture your children’s attention and help vacation time also be conducive to great learning time without them realizing that they’re learning.
(we loved both #1 and #2 of those so much, as did our children who have fond memories of the two places. since they were not available this time around, we are actually planning on going back once they’re both up and running again because if they were so incredible before, we can’t wait to see how the renovations turned out.)

And because eating is just as important as being entertained, here is the Wandering Darlings list of 5 places to grab a bite to eat.
  1. La Banquise – You must try Poutine in Montreal!  La Banquise is the most popular poutine place in the city, open 24 hours a day – there is always a line outside – but poutine can be found in most restaurants. If you can’t bear the cold temps, depending on when you visit, don’t worry – you can try poutine while you are in the city (or anywhere in the province of Quebec).
  2. Fairmount Bagel – For the best bagels ever, anywhere. Promise.
  3. Ma Poule Mouillée – Portuguese chicken and a fun twist to their poutine!
  4. Schwartz’s Deli – It’s the oldest deli in Canada and their sandwiches are terrific!
  5. Montreal Poutine – We love the poutine with fried chicken! Plus the location in Old Town is just perfect for a stop during your stroll.

Where to stay in Montreal – 5 fabulous options!
  1. We have stayed here and loved this hotel so very much! The location in Old Town is so convenient!
  2. We have also stayed here and again loved it! Especially the rooftop pool.
  3. This boutique hotel is right in the old city and is darling.
  4. This charming hotel is right by the Notre Dame Basilica.
  5. And this would be my dream hotel in Montreal!
