The Lodge at Torrey Pines
I have found the perfect European getaway for Americans and all you have to do is go to California! The Lodge at Torrey Pines is pinch-me perfect. The property has this incredible Scottish feel, which is not only in the kilts worn by some of the staff, but the architecture, golf course and cliffside views of the Pacific transport you to the Highlands for sure. Every time we stepped outside I couldn’t believe we were in San Diego County.
All of the landscaping makes you feel like you’re in the California Mountains, trading out palm trees for pine trees, but then you’d look out to the sea, the Lodge sits on a bluff high above the water below, and you’d realize you’re right on the coast in La Jolla.
The Scottish feel wanders in from the outside and drapes itself around the main sitting areas and bedrooms. The property is covered in fantastic art, the hallways feel like a museum but also as humble as walking through someones home and admiring their art collection. All of the bedrooms are filled with art, even in the bathrooms and the desks and nightstands are adorned with Tiffany stained glass lamps. I grew up with several in my childhood home, so this touch felt completely nostalgic.
We had the opportunity to stay in two adjoining Palisade rooms, both quite large and with their own ginormous fireplace with the prettiest emerald tiles surrounding it. Each room also had a fantastic sized patio for sunset admiring. From our rooms we had an ocean view and a wonderful glimpse of the entire world famous, Torrey Pines golf course which seemed to be floating above the sea.
I absolutely loved the rooms, they were luxurious with a vintage feel and the entire time we were there we wished time would slow down so we could savor it longer.
Adults can borrow the adorable electric bikes on the property and ride around on the trails surrounding the resort. We would have done this, but we didn’t have any little bikes for children with us, so next time – always next time.
But we did love the pool. When you’re relaxing poolside and you have this gorgeous mountain lodge towering around you, you feel like there’s no way that you’re close to reality. We visited in late October and the weather was slightly chilly, but the pool was extra warm and the children loved swimming. I know that vacation times often line up with summer and spring breaks from school, but if you can visit in the autumn, it’s truly beautiful and with the smell of all of the evergreens around the pool its perfect.
If you get tired of swimming, The Lodge at Torrey Pines offers a wonderful scavenger hunt for children as well as guided nature walks or you can take advantage of all of the hiking trails leaving the property.
We ate every meal at The Grill at Torrey Pines. We couldn’t get enough of how delicious it was. Every morning I consumed the Huevos Rancheros (the best in California in my opinion) and we also loved the breakfast burrito and the Omelet. The children loved the Brioche French Toast so much! But they tried several things, which means that I was able to have bites of several things and everything was so so good. For dinner, The Drugstore Hamburger with a side of pickled onions was amazing. Probably one of the best burgers we have ever had. Even if you’re not staying at the Lodge, I recommend having a really nice dinner here or if you’re an early riser, come for the Huevos Rancheros, you won’t regret it.
Things to do in the area
Children’s Beach was such a fun visit to see the harbor seals and sea lions spread out along the shore.
La Jolla Shores for some beach time
downtown San Diego is an easy drive away (if you visit in October, San Diego offers many attractions as complimentary for children)
locally we recommend grabbing a coffee or smoothie from the Parakeet Cafe (right near Children’s Beach) and the best gelato out of Italy, Bobboi Gelato (a close walk down to a wonderful green space overlooking the ocean).
The Lodge at Torrey Pines is seriously dreamy, it is one of my favorite places in California and I cherish we had the opportunity to make memories here and hope we get to add to those memories through the years. One giant thank you to everyone at The Lodge at Torrey Pines for hosting our family and for showing us such a wonderful vacation, we are forever grateful and honored.
